Data sources

Last updated 7 November 2026

RideInstead’s train times come from published timetables. We thank the operators and open-data projects below. Each dataset stays under its own licence and terms; we use it to work out typical journey times between cities, and we do not change or resell it.

Timetables

  • National and regional rail timetables in GTFS format, collected and mirrored by the open Transitous project, for operators including SNCF Voyageurs, ÖBB, Hellenic Train, MÁV, Czech Railways (CZPTT), PKP Intercity, Slovak Railways, CFR, BDZ, Elron, LTG Link, Vy, SJ and Go-Ahead.
  • Slovenia: the national timetable published by the Slovenian national access point (NAP) and DUJPP, used with attribution.
  • Italy: Trenitalia’s GTFS rebuilt by the community project trenitalia-gtfs, licensed CC BY 4.0.
  • Latvia: Vivi (Pasažieru vilciens) rail timetables, published as open data under CC0.
  • Italo (NTV) timetables via the community GTFS feed by Clément Desouche (deryclem), licensed CC BY 4.0.
  • Portugal: Comboios de Portugal (CP) and Ireland: Iarnród Éireann (Irish Rail) timetables, published as open data by the operators and national transport authorities.
  • Place names for the “did you mean” and closest-city suggestions: GeoNames, licensed CC BY 4.0.
  • Switzerland, Germany, the United Kingdom, Spain and other countries: the national open timetable feeds published by their operators and national access points.

Stations and airports

  • Station identifiers come from Trainline’s open stations list, so links open the right stations.
  • Airport locations come from OurAirports, which is in the public domain.

How accurate is it?

A journey time is the typical (median) time of the direct trains running on a normal weekday, rounded to the minute. Weekend, holiday and seasonal trains can take a different time, and a few stations may be matched to the wrong airport. Always check the final time and price with the operator before you buy.
