Terms of service

Last updated 7 November 2026

These terms apply to the RideInstead browser extension, the website rideinstead.eu and our server (together, “RideInstead”, “the service”), provided by RideInstead (“we”, “us”). By installing or using RideInstead you agree to these terms and to our privacy policy. If you do not agree, please do not use it.

1. What RideInstead is

RideInstead is a free tool that reads flight searches on your device and shows an indicative train alternative in Europe, with journey time, estimated CO₂ and a link to book on Trainline. Everything it shows (times, prices, changes, CO₂, distances) is an estimate for information only. Timetables, prices and availability change, so always check the details with the train operator before you book. The everyday comparison shown with your CO₂ total (“days of an average EU resident’s footprint”) divides your saving by 9.0 tonnes of CO₂e per person per year, the EU consumption footprint for 2023 published by Eurostat.

2. Provided “as is”

RideInstead is provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranties or guarantees of any kind, express or implied. We do not guarantee that it is accurate, complete, up to date, uninterrupted, secure or error-free, that it works on every website or browser, or that it suits your purpose. We may change, suspend or stop any part of it at any time without notice.

3. No refunds

RideInstead is free, so there is nothing to refund. Voluntary donations (for example through Ko-fi) are gifts and are not refundable, except where the law or Ko-fi’s own terms say otherwise. Tickets you buy from Trainline or another operator are a contract between you and them: their terms, prices, cancellations and refunds apply, and we are not a party to that contract.

4. No responsibility

To the fullest extent the law allows, we are not responsible or liable for any loss or damage of any kind arising from your use of RideInstead or your reliance on what it shows, including missed or cancelled trips, wrong times or prices, lost bookings, lost data, or the content, availability or actions of third-party websites and services (including Trainline, Partnerize, Ko-fi, Tree-Nation, Google, Cloudflare and your browser or its store). You use RideInstead at your own risk and make your own travel decisions.

Nothing in these terms excludes or limits liability that cannot be excluded by law (for example for intent or gross negligence, or for death or personal injury), and it does not affect any mandatory rights you have as a consumer.

5. Affiliate links and trees

The links to Radical Storage and Klook are affiliate links: we may earn a commission if you book, at no extra cost to you. Links to Trainline are plain links and earn us nothing. We plant trees with Tree-Nation, funded from those commissions, for each return or multi-city trip planned with RideInstead (a return counts as one tree, a multi-city trip as two; a one-way trip does not plant a tree), as described on our website; this is a voluntary gesture, not a promise of a particular number of trees by a particular date.

6. Using RideInstead fairly

Please do not misuse the service: do not try to break, overload or probe our server, bypass our bot checks, scrape it in bulk, send spam or unlawful content through the contact form, or use RideInstead to break the law or the terms of other websites. We may block access to anyone who does.

7. Third parties

RideInstead links to and works alongside websites and services we do not control. We are not responsible for them. Their own terms and privacy policies apply when you use them.

8. Our rights

The RideInstead name, logo and design belong to us. These terms give you a personal, non-exclusive, revocable permission to use the extension and website. They do not give you any other right in them.

9. Changes and ending

We may update these terms; the date above shows the latest version, and continuing to use RideInstead means you accept the update. You can stop at any time by uninstalling the extension. We may end or restrict your access if you break these terms.

10. Governing law

These terms are governed by Italian law. If you are a consumer, you keep the protection of the mandatory laws of the country where you live, and you may bring a claim in the courts of that country.

11. Contact

Questions about these terms: hello@rideinstead.eu or the contact form.
